The following is a review of Orioles minor league pitcher Radhames Liz. What I wrote then: “Prior to the 2006 season I called Liz a sleeper due to his ridiculous strikeout rate and great velocity. He went on to become one of the better pitching prospects in baseball following that season and was a major league contributor for a bad team last season. Of course, not surprisingly, Liz struggled to get the ball over the plate in Baltimore last season (23 walks in 24 innings). In fact, it can be argued that he had a hard time getting the ball over the plate at Double-A. Liz might have as much upside as any minor leaguer, but a BB/9 near 5.0 at Double-A is not going to cut it as Liz moves up. While the 24-year-old could be an ace somewhere down the line because of his high-90s fastball, he will need an Oliver Perez-like wakeup call before we see anything significant from him.”

Review: Right on cue. Liz had a 3.62 ERA in 15 starts for Triple-A New Orleans with almost a strikeout per inning. However, his major league time didn’t go quite as well. The fireballing right-hander posted a 6.72 ERA in 17 starts with significant problems throwing strikes and keeping the ball in the park. Liz still has immense upside and was able to string together some good starts late in the season, but predicting his performances was a roll of the dice. If the Orioles are to make a Tampa Bay Rays like rise, Liz will be a very important piece. He must continue to make progress with his control before we can bet on anything.
